ONE VOTE can help save our world

Council election time is your chance to protect the environment

On 5 May 2022, vote for an independent candidate standing for One Vote for the Planet at your local council election. With enough votes, they’ll do all they can to make your council tackle the climate and ecological crises.

Why the planet needs your help

The increasingly unpredictable climate and growing loss of biodiversity threaten all of our futures.

Research shows that the majority of people in the UK are worried about the climate and ecological crises.

In October 2021, the Office for National Statistics reported that 75 per cent of adults in Great Britain said they were worried about the impact of climate change.

In February 2022, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) painted a worrying picture of the pace of human-induced climate change, explaining how this is causing:

dangerous and widespread disruption in nature and affecting the lives of billions of people around the world.

Yet those in power are failing to cut carbon emissions or protect the environment. It doesn’t seem to be a priority for any political party.

Many of us want to stop climate change but it’s hard to know where to start.

What can local councils do?

Everyone can make a contribution to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing their consumption, but we need leadership from local councils to motivate and inform people.

The UK Climate Assembly
of 2020 said that the path to net zero carbon emissions must be underpinned by “education, choice, fairness and political consensus.

We need to inform and educate everyone – individuals, businesses, government and others – about climate change and the steps needed to tackle it. Local authorities have a significant role to play in this.

I’m no longer sceptical. I no longer have any doubt at all. I think climate change is the major challenge facing the world.
